Withee Malcolm Architects is honored to have been selected as Builder and Developer Magazine’s Architect of the Year. 2019 was a banner year for the firm with the completion of a number of new projects, both market rate and affordable. Throughout the year the magazine featured several of them, including 17 West and The Place in Costa Mesa in March and The Gateway at Willowbrook in October. For these articles and for the Architect of the Year story the editors asked thoughtful questions about the values that guide our practice. Responding to their queries helped us reflect on what we mean when we say, “design that makes a difference.” The December feature highlights three of our most recent projects—Calligraphy Urban Residences in Brea, Fusion in Irvine, and One South in Redondo Beach—each of them demonstrates how we bring together clients, agencies, and the public to create successful projects and redefine the role of design.
